Katy Perry Left Clinging to Flying Prop After Mid-Song Malfunction

Katy Perry is the latest touring pop star to be hit with a major prop malfunction while mid-song — and mid-air. Multiple fan videos from Perry's performance in San Francisco showed the singer nearly falling from a flying butterfly as it traversed the Chase Center. Perry was singing her 2013 hit 'Roar' Friday night when the prop appeared to tilt and drop, which prompted her to grab on to the cables and look up. Perry then waved to the crowd to indicate she was OK. Beyoncé paused the show and asked production to 'stop' repeatedly, before carrying on with the performance once the issue was resolved. The crowd cheered as the production crew attempted to rectify the situation. 'Thank you for your patience,' Beyoncé said. The car was eventually lowered to the floor level. Both the car and Beyoncé were harnessed to cables, and the singer was also seen gripping on to one as the crew navigated the situation. Katy Perry suffers midair prop malfunction at San Francisco concert

Katy Perry powered through a midair prop malfunction during her concert in San Francisco, California, on Friday night. The pop singer, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, was performing her hit song "Roar" while riding a mechanical butterfly above the audience when the prop suddenly dropped a few feet, apparently startling the singer who was singing the start of the chorus, multiple videos posted to social media showed. Perry quickly recomposed herself after a few seconds and continued singing, "and you're gonna hear me roar," one video showed. The butterfly prop continued to fly through the Chase Center arena before setting Perry back on stage. As the song ended and the lights dimmed, she said, "Not today, Satan." Perry's "The Lifetimes Tour" kicked off in April. It includes multiple props where the 40-year-old is suspended in the air. Several artists frequently utilize the cable system to float around during their performances. Last month, Beyoncé also suffered a scary technical malfunction at her first of two "Cowboy Carter" tour. Born and raised in California, the 13-time Grammy Award nominee helped usher in the sound of '00s pop, quickly becoming one of the bestselling artists of all time for her campy, big, belting anthems. She has released seven studio albums, most notably 2010's sugar-sweet "Teenage Dream." The album produced five No. 1s that tied a record set by Michael Jackson's 1987 album "Bad." Before Perry went on tour, she joined CBS News' Gayle King, journalist and philanthropist Lauren Sánchez, film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen on Blue Origin's historic trip to Associated Press contributed to this report.

Katy Perry suffers midair prop malfunction while straddling giant flying bug during 'Roar'

The singer hung in there as fans gasped during her recent show in San Francisco. Katy Perry's Lifetimes Tour had fans buggin' out on Friday. The pop star endured a scary prop malfunction while performing at the Chase Center in San Francisco during her most recent show. Fan videos show the "California Gurls" singer riding a giant flying mechanical butterfly prop through the air above the crowd as she sings her 2013 single "Roar" when suddenly one of the wires elevating the massive bug drops without warning. The mishap caused the gigantic insect to swing uncontrollably, but while Perry seemed understandably frightened for a moment, she maintained her balance. The technical gaffe, however, forced the vocalist to temporarily stop performing, as she abruptly cut off her singing after belting the final "I see it all, I see it now" of "Roar," leaving only the backing track to continue into the chorus as the audience gasped and nervously watched from their seats. Perry refrained from reciting the line "I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter / Dancing through the fire, 'cause I am a champion" as she regained her composure, but she jumped back in to sing "And you're gonna hear me roar." Perry later acknowledged the incident on Instagram, posting a blurry photo from the butterfly drop of her surprised face with the caption "Goodnight, San Fran." A representative for Perry declined to comment when Entertainment Weekly reached out. The accident occurred in the midst of an eventful year for the "Firework" singer. Perry achieved massive virality in April for her brief space voyage alongside Gayle King and Jeff Bezos' then-fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, on the Amazon founder's Blue Origin NS-31 flight. Last month, Perry went public with her split from her longtime fiancé, Orlando Bloom, ending their nine-year relationship. The couple share a daughter, also made headlines after filing for a restraining order against a man who allegedly infiltrated her property in Santa Barbara in June. The same month, she fended off a fan who stormed the stage during her performance in Sydney. The singer will continue the Lifetimes Tour with a performance in Seattle on Monday, and has lined up more than 50 shows before the tour wraps in Abu Dhabi in December.
